copy of ceramic sherd and 'shelter'
2018. This was my first project at Central St Martins. The brief was 'gimme shelter'. It involved copying a ceramic piece from the V&A, and constructing a 'shelter'. I responded to the brief, referencing the plight of migrants fleeing war in Syria . I copied a bowl fragment (made in Raqqa, 13th century, excavated Al Fustat 1970’s), from the ceramic collection, and placed it in a hand-built vitrine, with references to the Victorian era. I wrote and recorded an imaginary conversation between a modern day Syrian seeking refuge and the museum fragment which explores the concept of ‘shelter’ and value relating to artefacts and people.
