I developed a passion for clay during a career break from Medicine to care for my young children, which led me to study ceramics at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art.
I am interested in the documentary power of clay. It holds stories and carries them across time, from the present into the future as archaeological trace. Through the work of historians, I learned about pots made by enslaved women on plantations. These were objects of agency, power and resistance. This became a starting point for my practice, which explores the movement of skills, objects and people across the Black African diaspora.
My ongoing series draws on domestic, hand-coiled terracotta pottery from West Africa where my roots lie. These vessels were traditionally made by women and later taken into colonial museum collections, where they were reframed as ethnographic artefacts and stripped of context. Working within this lineage, I reinterpret these forms as sculptural vessels. I build up the forms with rolled coils of terracotta clay, working intuitively and allowing the marks of making to remain visible. Surfaces are activated through texture and colour – there is always the blue of sea and sky, so fundamental to diasporic journeys.
